Historic Brighton, Then and Now
The Houston Barnard Tract is a neighborhood in Brighton, NY (a suburb of Rochester) bordered by Highland Avenue, East Avenue, Elmwood Avenue, and I-490. Houston Barnard was a local developer who built in Rochester, Brighton, and Pittsford in the 1920's and 1930's. He favored the Tudor Revival style of architecture, focusing especially on the Cotswolds Cottage subset of Tudor. A tour of the area will show you a plethora of mansions designed in this spectacular style. A more in-depth look at Houston Barnard's life can be found at
Brighton was first a sprawling farming community and then a roaring canal village before it finally evolved into a sedate automobile suburb. The Spring, 2006 issue of Historic Brighton News examines some aspects of its suburban phase through a fable of life in the Houston Barnard tract during the late 1920s. (pp. 2-5) The newsletter also contains numerous photos of homes in the Houston Barnard neighborhood, as well as an article by Elizabeth Brayer on the Origin of Suburbs. Present-day Brighton has a population of 36,609. Except for a few parcels, the town is completely developed, with homes, office buildings and businesses occupying the former farm acres. Nowhere more than three miles wide, the town stretches in a crescent shape thirteen miles from the Indian Landing at the northeast corner to the Genesee River in West Brighton. It is the third smallest town in Monroe County.
